About the Author

Born in 1950, Tom lived and learned through the time during which pencils made the transition to pixels. After earning a Doctorate degree, Tom’s career in studying and applying the principles of Successional Ecology, often brought him back to a classroom setting. In the later years of his career, working as a college professor and a tutor, Tom’s journey through the evolution of education was coming to a close. Looking back along that path, he noted that some fundamental aspects of education had been smothered by the advance of technology. How to be Smart is an attempt to resurrect the most important of them: the ability to think without the assistance of an electronic device.
